Vince Parrett to Moderate SCCBA Virtual Panel on Litigation Funding on October 29, 2020
In its recent Formal Opinion (Interim) No. 14-002, the California State Bar Committee on Professional Responsibility stated that “ a lawyer’s representation of the client may involve advising the client as to whether litigation funding would assist in accomplishing the client’s goals,” and “a lawyer representing a client in a matter funded by a litigation funder has an obligation to understand how the funding agreement impacts the litigation and advise the client.” Join us for a frank discussion about litigation funding—what it is, how to effectively use it, and important ethical issues for lawyers and their clients. Vince Parrett of Bergeson, LLP will moderate a discussion with Stephanie Southwick of the litigation finance firm Omni Bridgeway (formerly known as Bentham IMF), Matthew Harrison (also of Omni Bridgeway), and Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Sunil R. Kulkarni covering topics such as the funding process, how to get your case funded, the discoverability of funding agreements, a funder’s role in the settlement process, navigating potential conflicts with clients, and other ethical issues. This event will take place on October 29, 2020, from noon to 1 p.m. Please visit the Santa Clara County Bar Association’s website to register.
